Man, he was a legend and I miss him every time I think about listening to the radio for UGA. I remember sitting on the tailgate of my dad's '71 Chevy listening to him describe Herschel Walker's runs. I was born a UGA fan...but, those times cemented it into my being.

Younger people (under about 40) really don't have a memory of when games were rarely on tv.  I remember vividly how it was a big deal for a game in Athens to be on tv and how, outside of bowl games, Georgia games were on tv maybe once a year and not always when the game was in Athens.  Munson was as close as you could get to "seeing" the game.

Sitting in a boat or on a dove field listening to Munson describe what was happening was almost as good as watching the game in my childhood.

That is a great point and exactly right!  It's funny...it went from rarely on TV...then, it was the BIG games were on for few years (seems like it was a long time), and finally, MOST of the games were on (again, fast forward several years), to ALL of the games were on (somehow).  

I think it is kinda funny though...to your point, radio was the ONLY option if weren't lucky enough to be at the game.  Hell, you couldn't just look up the stats either...you had to wait on the Sunday paper and sometimes they didn't have it if it was a night game.

When I was a student at Georgia, we couldn't wait to get the Sunday AJC and read all of the stats and articles about the game.  There was obviously no internet, so there was no Youtube highlights or podcast commentary.  The only highlights available were on the Vince Dooley Show on Sunday afternoon.  If the game had been an away game, the VD show was the only time we really got to see the big plays Munson had described the day before.  If it had been a home game, we got to see the play again from the overhead angle and maybe a slow motion replay of a big catch.  There was no video board in the stadium so you had to see the play and remember it and then it was gone forever.

Larry was a legend and a man of the people - mostly the fans (specifically the young lady fans). He came up on the railroad tracks dressed in a London Fog trench coat and shook hands with fans before a game in 1980 - the last year for the Track People.
