Lucy Beckham High School's offensive lineman Ty Johnson was destined to be a ‘Dawg – a Georgia Bulldog, that is.

[b]The 6-6, 300-pound Johnson rated as a 4-star prospect is widely regarded as one of the top high school offensive linemen in South Carolina this season.

His father, Travis, had been an offensive lineman at Georgia during the mid-1990s and was roommates with quarterback Mike Bobo and close friends with current Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart.

Growing up, Ty Johnson immersed himself in the Georgia football program. The family would make the four-hour plus trek from the Lowcountry to Athens, Ga., for games at least once a year and Ty would attend Georgia’s youth football camp.

“I grew up a Georgia fan and a lot of that was because of my father,” Ty Johnson said.

One of Ty's prized possessions is a photo of himself shaking hands with Smart at midfield of Sanford Stadium when he was 10 years old.

But despite his early exposure and the family ties to the football program, Ty Johnson’s commitment to Georgia this past spring was not a forgone conclusion.

“People might think because I played at Georgia that I wouldn’t let Ty go anywhere else, but that’s just not true,” said Travis Johnson, who played at Georgia from 1993-97. “I’m not one of those Little League parents, I’m not overbearing, I’m not hovering over him on every decision he makes.

“I wanted him to do his own thing. I wanted him to go where he was going to be happy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super happy he’s going to Georgia, but this was his decision. No matter what he decided I was going to support him 100 percent.”

Johnson had more than two dozen scholarship offers, including from South Carolina, Auburn, Arkansas, Duke, Tennessee, UCLA, Stanford and North Carolina.
