Old man rant incoming…I think those of us under 60 failed…

Our children.    

We walk a 5 mile trek around Athens 2-3 times per week.   Some of that walk includes the Milledge stretch by the frat/sorority houses.   I’ve witnessed a phenomenon over the past 4-5 years where the sorority girls (fraternity guys far less) cannot be bothered to move over on the sidewalk when walking two or three wide.   I always walk on the street side to shield my wife from the street.   But, it’s just gotten comical how 95% of the girls will literally make you move over and they don’t even notice it.   We aren’t spring chickens and clearly their elders and they, almost bullishly, insist YOU be the one to move.   It’s gotten comical.   

Now, before you say I’m the old yelling at clouds, you’re absolutely right.  No question.  

But, I honestly don’t believe our generation or generations past would have showed this type disrespect for folks older than us.    Hell, I’m not asking for them to move much or dramatically alter their path.   Just common curtesy.   It screams entitlement and lack of give damn.   

I blame it on the way we’ve coddled them and allowed them to not acknowledge or respect adults.    We let them think there were no authority figures other than
 Us and we stopped making them say “yes and no sir/mam”.   

This is the spot where I could quickly make this a post for the Lounge.   But, I’ll leave it at our failings as parents to let kids struggle and respect their elders.

I agree with your analysis. I have just over 600 of our finest young Americans reporting to me. I also teach classes at a prominent business school. I hold many of my employees' and my students' futures in my hand. Yet these unwashed, unlettered dolts are third rate humans. They talk over me when I instruct them. They interrupt. They break every class room and military code known to humankind.

I have relocated many from my sunny Gulf of American FOB to Minot AFB and referred about 50 or so to the school's Dean of Students for discipline. They react as if they are affronted royalty.  Many have told me to my face they have no respect for me nor my position and rank.

I trust misery and vice will haunt them all of their sorry lives.

What I’m describing is a flat out epidemic of a couple of generations and it isn’t a FEW of them.   It’s 95+%.

We're both working with circumstantial evidence here, but I will add I work with a gaggle of guys and gals in their 20s and 30s who are thoughtful, polite, and hard working. I sure hope they're not the exception for their generations. 

Anyhoo, is it football season yet?  Let's get back to arguing about important things like BTBSECCOC Mike Bobo!
