ATHENS — Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton might not appear in Top 10 quarterback rankings in the SEC, but he’s No. 16 in the preseason Heisman Trophy odds at 40-to-1.
Stockton and the Bulldogs figure to have a lot of say in who wins the prestigious individual award.
Texas’ quarterback and one-time UGA recruit Arch Manning leads the list of favorites, at 5-to-1.
Stockton, who came on in the second half to beat the Longhorns in last season’s SEC Championship Game — with Manning sitting on the bench behind Quinn Ewers — will get a chance to beat the Texas Heisman Trophy Favorite when the teams meet on Nov. 15 at Sanford Stadium.

Other Heisman Trophy favorites, per Circa Sports odds, are LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier (8-to-1), Clemson’s Cade Klubnik (9-1), Penn State’s Drew Allar (12-1) and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith (16-1).
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is sixth on the Heisman Trophy favorites list, and Stockton will get to match up with him on Nov. 1 in the annual matchup with the Gators in Jacksonville.
Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck — last year’s preseason favorite, now at Miami — is No. 10 on the list.
Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson (30-to-1) and Tide receiver Ryan Williams (40-to-1) are two more favorites that will need to go through Stockton and the Bulldogs to improve their chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.
Alabama plays at Georgia at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27.
Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons is another player among the Top 20 on the Heisman Trophy preseason list who will play between the hedges when the Rebels come to Athens for an Oct. 18 showdown.
Stockton has just one career start under his belt as he enters fall camp the No. 1 quarterback on the Bulldogs roster, but he’ll be surrounded by good playmakers and a defense that’s expected to dominate.
Former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett serves as a prime example of how team success can factor into the Heisman Trophy voting.
Bennett wasn’t selected as an All-American or first-team All-SEC, but he finished fourth in the Heisman voting on the heels of a 50-30 SEC Championship Game win over LSU in a game that saw him throw for four touchdowns for a 13-0 team and earn the game’s MVP honors.
Stockton recently shared how he sees similarities between himself and Bennett.
“The way he played, the way he styled some of the things he did, the way he carried himself,” Stockton told USA Today SMG. “Mobility, he’s quick, he can get out of the pocket and has good pocket movement.
“Had a lot of swagger with what he did. I see the same things in myself.”
Stockton, at the very least, will have his chance to prove he’s worthy of the comparison with head-to-head showdowns with other Heisman Trophy favorites on the Bulldogs’ schedule this season.
