Experts say spinach is essentially a performance-enhancing drug
Scientists from Freie Universität Berlin are claiming that spinach is essentially a steroid and calling for it to be banned for athletes. The scientists contacted The World Anti-Doping Agency to inform them of a hormone in spinach called ecdysterone.
A 10-week study showed the effect that ecdysterone has, with those who consumed it seeing far greater results than those who did not. The study involved 46 athletes who followed the same strength program. One group received a placebo and the other received ecdysterone.
The ecdysterone group developed more muscle mass and was stronger than the placebo group.
