UGA practice 8/9
- OL is solid and consistently opened up running lanes. They struggled at times with the pass rush of our DL and with balls getting batted down.
- QBs are a struggle. Gunner is clearly QB1. He took some risks and threw some balls that I don’t see him doing in a game. I would say it was overall a subpar (B- if I gave him a grade) practice for him, yet he is still clearly QB1. Pugs threw a few balls too hard (fastballs on short passes) and had several balls batted down. Pugs, Gunner, and Ginn have the shortest motions. Gunner has really improved in this area. Millender and Beaver had bad days. Millender struggled with accuracy on short - long passes. Montgomery was accurate but late with the ball a few times as were all QBs at times. I think some of this has to do with lack of separation by pass catchers.
- RBs - Frazier and Bowen are 1a and 1b. We are in great hands if they remain healthy. Lamar had a big run and Peanut flashed prior to going down with cramps. Peanut and Sacovie will probably be the main KR/PR guys.
- TEs - what can I say here…we are LOADED! My favorite play of the day was an end around to Reddell and he broke contain by the CB. Bolden tried to make a play 7-10 yards down field but was knocked back 4-5 yards by a mean stiff arm from Reddell. Elyiss will be a big factor but Barbour, Reddell will be (or should be) featured.
- WRs - Some good and some bad here. Route trees helped some of them get open but Kirby was complaining about their inability to get separation. That being said, a few got past E Rob with Blackshear catching a long pass against ERob down the sideline on a double move. ERob also ran into another CB when he was playing man and his WR went in motion. Offense faked a screen and “blocker (CJ Wiley)” released and scored for an easy TD catch. Taylor had a few impressive plays in a flat drill making defenders miss.
- Defense looks good and we appear to have some quality depth being built. Kyron Jones is physical in the running game and continually received praise from Kirby. Mello had a good day and several DL got pressure in the pass game. Kahlil Barnes made some plays. Jaylan Morgan continues to be ridden hard by Kirby. Maybe this is Kirby seeing a lot of potential in him but he was doing the same to Jaylan in April practice I saw. Todd Robinson was also getting some tough love. E Rob has to work on coming up in run coverage as he was leaving the inside hole far too open and Kirby was coaching him hard. E Rob did have 2 or 3 INTs today mostly in man coverage.
- Specialists - Peyton needs to stay healthy. So solid and I don’t have confidence in Zureikat. P Wade Register had more impressive hang time and leg vs Drew Miller but they were kicking from the 50 yard line so it is difficult to measure.
