Dooley was a 7 win a season coach without Herschel. Dooley generally won the games he was supposed to win, threw in a big upset every couple of years and beat tech most years. That was good enough for Georgia fans at the time.

Richt was almost the anti Dooley. He won more games but generally managed to shit the bed at least once a year against a team he should beat and that bed shitting usually cost Georgia a shot at a championship. He also had some sort of mental block when it came to UF, who Dooley dominated. Richt turned things around against AU and UT though. I think Richt was better than Dooley. It's really hard to compare the two because the game and Georgia fan expectations changed so much between Dooley and Richt. Richt had the burden of Georgia fans expecting another NC every year and college football becoming the big money thing it is now. Dooley could keep the fans happy with 7 or 8 wins, victories over UF and tech and a bowl trip. |
