Georgia Natural Wonder #161 - Vineyard Mountain - Bartow County Peaks

I keep finding mountain peaks in Bartow County but there is not much information on most of them. They don't even have a Wikipedia page. There are 40 mountains over 1000 feet in Bartow County Georgia. Now there is several images and All Trails has some commentary for Vineyard Mountain. So we will feature that for the most part today. But like the Islands of McIntosh County, I am going to lump the remaining mountains over 1000 feet into this single wonder to help move us out of Bartow County. I may visit each mountain one day if we are still looking for wonders.

Pine Mountain (Cartersville)

We have covered the three highest peaks of Bartow County with earlier post. #1 Hanging Mountain and #2 Little Pine Log Mountain GNW#160. We hiked #3 Pine Mountain with GNW #157

Sharp Top Mountain

Sharp Top Mountain is the 4th highest Summit in Bartow County, GA and can be found on the White East USGS topographic quad map. The GPS coordinates are 34.2620394 (latitude), -84.721602 (longitude) and the approximate elevation is 1,529 feet above sea level. There is another Sharp Top Mountain in Georgia, and that is in Pickens County close to Jasper.

Only image I can find of Sharp Top Mountain Bartow County Georgia.

Sharp Top Mountain is situated east of Aubrey. As we discussed in our last post, the Aubrey Mine Cut is now under Aubrey Lake as you can see in this aerial image.

Fishermen will find a variety of fish including small mouth bass, large mouth bass, black bass and striped bass here.

Bee Mountain

Bee Mountain is the 5th tallest mountain in Bartow County Georgia and has an elevation of 1370 feet. Bee Mountain is situated south of Hidden Hills, close to Gene Tilley Lake.

Can barely see Bee Mountain in distance from Gene Tilley Lake.

1366

Now this mountain doesn't even have a name. It is just listed by it's height. It is west of I-75 and south of Georgia Hwy. 20.

Crest of 1366.

But by golly, 1366 is the 6th tallest Mountain in Bartow County.

Vineyard Mountain

Vineyard Mountain has an elevation of 1352 feet. It is the 7th tallest mountain in Bartow County, Georgia. Vineyard Mountain is situated southwest of Happy Hollow, close to Allatoona Lake Dam and Powerhouse.

Located within Cartersville Georgia's Riverside Park, the 2.8 mile (each way) Vineyard Mountain Trail climbs and descends Vineyard Mountain before traveling along the shoreline of Lake Allatoona to Bethany Bridge.

Built and maintained by the Eagle Scouts, Vineyard Mountain Trail offers a trail head at each end, with one being at the kiosk in Riverside Park while the other is located at the parking area adjacent to Bethany Bridge along Red Top Mountain Road.

To reach Vineyard Mountain Trail from I-75, take Exit 288, GA 113 south to US 41 South. See Riverside Park sign then left onto Allatoona Dam Road. The second trail head of Vineyard Mountain Trail is reached from I-75 by taking Exit 285, east onto Red Top Mountain Road to the parking area at Bethany Bridge.

To reach East Loop Trail from I-75, take Exit 290 onto GA 20 and travel east. Turn right onto GA Spur 20 at the traffic light and continue 4 miles. A parking area for the East Loop Trail Head is located on the right, just past Bartow Beach Road.

Vineyard Mountain Trail is a 5.3 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Cartersville, Georgia that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until October.

Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

From the reviews:

Not recommended for beginners. this is a treacherous trail and would be great for training for AT. Hiking poles were a big help.

Top of mountain is kind of a let down since it’s just a phone tower, but good workout for me and the pup. Nice being next to lake.

Beautiful and challenging. Lots of hills.

I’d recommend this for experienced hikers and someone looking for a workout.

The view at the top isn’t anything special because of the tree coverage, but I found a nice spot near the top with a great view of the Allatoona Dam.

I’d definitely come back in late fall or winter for better views!

Bufford Mountain

Bufford Mountain is the 8th tallest summits in Bartow County, GA and can be found on the Cartersville USGS topographic quad map. The GPS coordinates are 34.2478732 (latitude), -84.750214 (longitude) and the approximate elevation is 1,335 feet above sea level.

Collins Mountain

Collins Mountain Collins Mountain is the 26th tallest mountain in Bartow County Georgia and has an elevation of 1050 feet. Collins Mountain is situated northeast of Adairsville. I was drawn to Collins Mountain by these cool cave entrance pictures.

Photographer wrote "I've always thought the entrance to Yarbrough Cave is one of the most unique in Georgia. The cave is developed in carbonates of the Ordovician age Knox Group. There is a beautiful natural arch at the entrance. Seems like development around the mountain is quickly encroaching on it."
